Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is a predictable animated film with appealing visuals, which, thanks to the novel characters of the Krakens, looks original at first glance, but at second glance it's a boring story about family relationships, finding oneself and breaking down prejudices. The recent Elemental rode a similar fire-and-water wave, but in the case of Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken I was bothered by the excessive affectation of some of the characters. When it comes to family relationships combined with a certain mythological overlay, I think last year's Turning Red was better in that regard. An underwater one-shot for just one viewing, with nothing to write home about. ()
