A bittersweet, comic, romantic film set in a small town in southern Sweden before World War I. Jacob, a bookseller, leads a quiet life, free of problems. But one day, his idyll is shattered when a woman from the community returns after many years abroad. She is a good woman, quite a lady in fact, and sensual, and Jacob finds an initial infatuation with her flaring into passion. Each of them, has a secret past, yet they respect one another's secrets. Shortly after they marry, however, Jacob happens to discover his wife's secret. It seems she is not quite the fine lady he had presumed her to be. In fact, she has been a whore. Their world collapses around them. (official distributor synopsis)
