Der Orlow, the sixth film directed by Louise and Jakob Fleck for the Berlin Hegewald-Film production company, tells the adventurous story of a pilot, a mysterious dancer, a stolen gemstone, and a false grand prince. Contemporary critics praised this film adaptation of Bruno Granichstaedten’s eponymous operetta for its “tasteful and visually effective” direction and the performances of the two leading actors, Vivian Gibson and Iván Petrovich, who were to appear in further films made by the Flecks during their time in Berlin. On a technical level, the work of the Austrian camera pioneer Eduard Hoesch is particularly impressive. (Viennale)
