The romance of a red haired maiden and a brave prince. Once upon a time in the Kingdom of Tanbarun, there lived an independent young woman with beautiful red hair. A skilled herbalist by trade, Shirayuki used her knowledge of plants and medicine to heal the people of her city. But when her apple-red hair drew the unwanted attention of the devious Prince Raj, she was left with two options become his unwilling concubine, or leave her home forever. In the dead of night, she cut her hair and escaped to the neighboring kingdom of Clarines where she was found by a kind young man named Zen. The mysterious stranger turned out to be none other than the dashing prince of her newfound kingdom. And with his protection, Shirayuki was finally free to chase her dreams. Now, she's set her sights on becoming a royal court herbalist and it will take a lot more than poisoned apples, scheming lords, and challenging exams to stand in her way. (Madman Entertainment)

Season 1 (2015) (S01)

English Snow White with the Red Hair features a respectable love story that girls and women will probably enjoy quite a lot. However, somehow it did not leave me with much, except a simple love story. Sure, it is nice to watch, and the music is pleasant enough, although somehow I was expecting more. I found the first episode quite interesting, and I enjoyed the allusions to Snow White. I expected it could carry on in a similar relaxed spirit, and it more or less did, although I still felt something was missing. If I were to compare the "red-head" in this show to another "red-head" in Yona of the Dawn, the most recent show which strongly appealed to me from the shoujo genre, I would have to say that the character Shirayuki does not strike me as having any great room to develop her character further. Plus, while it is great that she has a goal and determination, that objective does not seem very important to me, and therefore, somehow, I do not feel like I can root for the main female protagonist that much. Zen is also okay in general, even though I did not have as strong an impression of him as I did of, say, Son Hak from Yona of the Dawn, where I thought practically from the first episodes that he was just a really cool guy. Zen is more like a prince from a fairy tale like "The Princess with the Golden Star". Even though I have nothing against fairy tales, they do not grab me as much as they used to. Another minor point is the lack of any good fun. A love story is fine, even though sometimes I need a little break from all the sparkle and "save the princess" situations, and some fun is really good for that. As an example of shoujo anime, this show could be considered above-average, and as I write in the introduction, members of the opposite sex might enjoy this. However, as a guy, I was not that much into it, and although it is easy to watch, it is not worth more than an average rating, in my opinion. I am probably going to think before watching the second season in January, 5/10. ()

Season 2 (2016) (S02)

English Where most romantic anime series end, Shirayuki's narrative is actually just beginning. Even though it is nice that the main two protagonists have professed their love for each other, it is now time to start fighting for it, developing it, and protecting it. This aspect makes the second season much more interesting because something is going on almost all the time. Also, most of the events are pretty interesting. Zen is still too much of the perfect prince, although Shirayuki does not quite come across as a weak damsel in distress anymore, and I find that adds to her appeal. Plus, I have now grown quite fond of some of the supporting characters, especially Kiki, Mitsuhide, and my personal favorite, Obi. In other words, I am getting more and more into it now. Also, this time I am pretty sure that I am going to watch the next season when it comes out. 7/10. ()
