Ian McKellen’s London stage debut was in 1964 in "A Scent of Flowers" led to an invitation by Laurence Olivier to join the National Theatre production. He was soon established as the leading classical actor of his generation for his work with the Royal Shakespeare Company and on Broadway as Salieri in "Amadeus" (1981 Tony Award).
