Amar Kanwar studied History at Ramjas College, Delhi University and Communication at Jamia millia Islamia. After making several short films he joined People’s Science Institute in 1988 as a researcher on health and safety in the coal-mining belt of Madhya Pradesh. In 1990, he returned to the film world, focused on subjects such as labour, indigenous rights, gender, religious fundamentalism and ecology. Kanwar has received many awards for his work as a filmmaker and artist, and he has exhibited his work all around the world.
