Biography

Serik Aprymov (b. 1960) was accepted in 1984 to Moscow's Film School (VGIK), and there attended Sergei Solovyev's masterclass in 1989. He soon gained attention with the shorts Hypnotist (Gipnozshi, 1986) and Two Riding on a Motorbike (Motociclage mingessken, 1987). For his feature debut Final Stop (Kijan, 1989), shown in the section Focus on Kazakhstan at Karlovy Vary in 1999, he was awarded the Main Prize at Moscow's Debut FF and the Molodist Kiev IFF. After spending a year in London, he shot Dream within a Dream (Zas zigittin kundeligi, 1993), which looks into the frustrations of a student theatre director. After spending some time in business, he returned with two popular festival films about present-day conditions in his homeland, Aksuat (1997) and Three Brothers (Agajyndy ysheu, 2000).
