Biography
Dick's acted, danced, and sang his way through movies, television, and the stage, making Dick Van Dyke an entertainment triple-threat long before Hollywood used such hyphenates. He even wrote in his memoir, My Lucky Life In And Out of Show Business, that his retirement plans have yet to work out.
Van Dyke's most critical career break came in 1960 when director Gower Champion hired him as the male lead opposite Chita Rivera in the new Broadway-bound stage musical Bye Bye Birdie. He won a Tony for that performance and went on to star in the film version as well.
He then went on to star in his own sitcom, in the role of TV comedy writer Rob Petrie on The Dick Van Dyke Show. He's also had unforgettable roles in such musical classics as Marry Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. In 2013, Dick Van Dyke was the recipient of the 2013 SAG Life Achievement Award.
